COPA NYC 2010

The World Cup may be over, but "international" soccer competition doesn't stop. This weekend will host the finals of COPA NYC, a local soccer tournament that brings together twenty-four teams from the New York area, each representing their own nationalities.

What better way to show that the Game is in US, then to host a tournament played by Americans, representing their families international roots?

A twenty-four-game round robin was played last weekend to narrow the field down to eight teams — who moved on to knockout stages. In the quarterfinals NYC Ireland, NYC Jamaica, NYC Argentina and NYC Poland advanced and will play in this weekend's semifinals.

Argentina and Ireland both made the semifinals in last year's inaugural COPA NYC — Argentina went on to finish in a tie for third and Ireland finished second, losing to NYC Albania in the finals.

COPA NYC has been nice enough to show its support for the US World Cup bid by displaying GoUSABid fieldboards at the tournament.

Check out all the teams that played in this year's COPA NYC and a picture from the action below.
