Spain wins World Cup

Congratulations and Felicitaciones to Spain, winners of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™!

Africa's first World Cup tournament will forever be remembered as the spot of Spain's first finals victory.

In typical thrilling Spanish fashion, La Furia Roja scored late and edged the Dutch with a lone goal. All of Spain's wins in the knockout round have been by a score of 1-0, with the game-winner coming in the second half — or later — of play.

Spain waited just a little bit longer to put the Netherlands away. Andres Iniesta, the 5 ft. 7 in. middfielder from Barcelona, drove home the game winner in the 116th minute.

In a match where the first goal didn't materialize until the second period of extra time, the goalies truly shined in the World Cup finals. Both Casillas and Stekelenburg made heroic saves to keep their teams alive.

Arjen Robben was robbed twice at the hands and feet of Casillas. In the 62nd minute, Sneider played a devious ball between Spain's center backs that found Robben for a breakaway. Casillas stayed low and deflected the shot with his foot. Robben would have a chance to redeem himself twenty minutes later. Playing off of a header by Van Persie, Robben used his quickness to get behind the defense but was smothered by the patient Casillas.

Spain saw their best opportunity on goal thwarted as well. Iniesta played a perfect through-ball in to Fabregas who was denied by the alert foot of Stekelenburg.

After 120 minutes of play and 14 yellow cards, Spain proved that they were the better of the two teams and the best in the world.

In addition to winning the Finals, Spain took home the FIFA Fair Play Award and several of its players received individual accolades. David Villa netted the Bronze Ball and Silver Boot, Iker Casillas the Golden Glove. The Netherlands’ Wesley Sneijder was awarded the Silver Ball.
