US v. Ghana

What's the perfect recipe for World Cup fever in the United States?

You start with a US team making it to the knockout stage for only the fourth time ever. Mix in some amazing comeback results that truly show the American spirit. Then add in the only African team remaining in the continent's first World Cup.

Combine that with a US team that has truly captured the love of a nation with their never-give-up attitude and last minute heroics. Finally, make the game a matchup against the team that knocked the Americans out of the World Cup just four years ago and voila, World Cup fever.

On paper, Ghana vs. the United States is a fairly even match-up. The Black Stars possess a stingy defensive line, extreme speed and some very physical players. But, they have also had real trouble scoring goals and are one of the youngest teams in this World Cup.

Some questions that people are asking:

  • Will the United States running-heavy training prepare them for the short-two-day turnaround from the last game?
  • Can the US avoid giving up a quick goal? Can they go up early and play with a lead for the first time in this World Cup?
  • How will the US defense be able to handle the speedy Ghanian team?
  • Who will Coach Bob Bradley — who has used 18 of 20 field players in the first three games — start against the Black Stars?

The United States considered getting knocked out in group play a "failure," so this game is what the team has been playing for: a chance to show the world again that Americans are a soccer team that can't be taken lightly.

And they'll have just that. This game will likely be the most watched soccer game in US history. Already this year, viewership of USA games in this country is up 68 percent from four years ago, and with a game at 2:30 PM on a Saturday could see truly dramatic ratings increases.
