In 1967 when the United Soccer Association debuted, the Houston Stars were among the charter teams. The Stars led the league in early attendance - averaging over 19,000 fans a game.

The United Soccer Association has long since folded, but professional soccer has remained alive and well in Houston. The Houston Hurricane played in the NASL, and Houston Summit played professional indoor soccer.

Today, MLS's Houston Dynamo is the biggest team in town. The Dynamo won MLS titles in back-to-back years after their inception in 2005.

Completed in 2002, Reliant Stadium is located eight miles southwest of downtown Houston. With a seating capacity of 71,500, the stadium has played host to the Houston Texans (NFL) since 2002. In addition, the stadium was the site of Super Bowl XXXVIII in 2004, the NCAA South Regional Finals in 2008, and WrestleMania XXV in 2009.

During the summer of 2009, Reliant Stadium attracted 47,713 spectators for a Gold Cup doubleheader featuring Guadeloupe vs. Nicaragua and Mexico vs. Panama. The stadium is served by the METRO rail.
