Soccer in Miami

Miami is home to soccer fans from all over the world. From Miami Beach to Coral Gables, there's no shortage of players - or enthusiasm.

Major League Soccer was well represented in South Florida with Miami FC from 1997 to 2001. In the club's four years of existence, it saw notable players such as Chris Henderson, Pablo Mastroeni, Preki and Kyle Beckerman defending its colors.

Since 2006, Miami FC has represented Miami in the First Division of the USL. During their first game at Tropical Park Stadium, Mario "El Loco" Rafael Rodriguez scored the winning goal with three minutes to spare, defeating the reigning Jamaican champion Portmore United.

Still a young team, Miami FC held a contest in local schools to find a mascot. The winner was "Hotshot," a flaming hedgehog designed by Robert Morgan Educational Center senior Daniel Townsend.

Famed international player and USMNT team member Jozy Altidore was born and raised in nearby Boca Raton, FL.
