Soccer in Boston
The story of soccer in Boston stretches all the way back to the pilgrims who played the game upon landing in Plymouth. Many years later, a small band of revolutionaries dropkicked boxes of British tea into Boston Harbor - and the rest is history.
Boston is home to the New England Revolution - one of the original MLS teams, and the 2007 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup Champions.
Boston's major soccer venue is Gillette Stadium - home of the Revolution. When the FIFA World Cup was held in the US in 1994, more than 50,000 fans bought tickets to watch such legendary games as Italy's 2-1 victory over Nigeria and subsequent defeat of Spain at Gillette's predecessor - Foxboro Stadium. Later, Foxboro Stadium was named by FIFA as the Most Hospitable Venue of the '94 World Cup tournament.
About Gillette Stadium
Completed in 2002, Gillette Stadium is located in Foxborough, Mass., 28 miles from Boston.
With a seating capacity of 71,693, the stadium has played host to both the New England Patriots (NFL) and New England Revolution (MLS) since 2002.
In addition, the stadium was the site of the 2002 MLS Cup, four games of the 2003 FIFA Women's World Cup, the 2008 and 2009 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship, and the 2003 AFC Championship Game.
During the summer of 2009, Gillette Stadium hosted four SuperLiga matches and attracted 24,137 for a Gold Cup doubleheader of the United States vs. Haiti and Honduras vs. Grenada.
