Soccer in Dallas
In North Texas, Cowboys football comes to mind - but make no mistake, soccer culture is thriving in Dallas.
The city boasts FC Dallas - a charter member of Major League Soccer (MLS). Moreover, Dallas is home to a legendary youth soccer scene and world renowned Dallas Cup Tournament where players such as England's David Beckham, Spain's Raul and other future starts sharpen their skills.
Dallas' own Kenny Cooper currently plays for 1860 Munich in Germany, and has spent time with Manchester United and his hometown FC Dallas - as well the US National Team.
In 1994, Dallas was an enthusiastic host city to the FIFA World Cup. Over 60,000 were in attendance at the Cotton Bowl for games where Brazil beat the Netherlands and Sweden beat the Netherlands.
Dallas is also home to the Texas Outlaws of the PASL and will welcome its own NPSL team in 2010.
About the Stadiums
Cotton Bowl
Completed in 1932 with a seating capacity of 89,000, the Cotton Bowl is located in Fair Park, site of the State Fair in Dallas.
During the State Fair each year, the Cotton Bowl plays host to the Red River Rivalry, the annual Texas-Oklahoma college football game.
The stadium was the host of the annual Cotton Bowl Classic college football game for 72 years from 1937 to 2009.
The Cotton Bowl also served as a competition venue for six matches during the 1994 FIFA World Cup USA™, including a quarterfinal by eventual champion Brazil over the Netherlands attended by 63,500 spectators.
The Cotton Bowl is served by DART rail.
Cowboys Stadium
Completed in May 2009, Cowboys Stadium is located in Arlington, 22 miles from downtown Dallas.
With a seating capacity of 80,000 that is expandable to more than 100,000, the stadium is the new, state-of-the-art home of the Dallas Cowboys (NFL).
Soccer will always be remembered as the first-ever sporting event held in Cowboys stadium. That occurred on July 19, 2009, with a quarterfinal doubleheader of the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup with Costa Rica defeating Guadeloupe followed by Mexico beating Haiti in front of a sold-out crowd of 82,252 spectators.
Also during the summer of 2009, Cowboys Stadium hosted a World Football Challenge match between Chelsea and Club America that attracted 57,229 spectators.
The stadium will host Super Bowl XLV in 2011, the 2009 Big XII Football Championship and Cotton Bowl, the 2010 NBA All-Star Game and the 2014 NCAA Men's Final Four.
