Soccer in Los Angeles

In America, few places have a more enthusiastic soccer culture than southern California.

The LA area is home to two MLS teams: Club Deportivo Chivas USA and the LA Galaxy. In 2005 Chivas qualified for the playoffs under coach Bob Bradley, now head coach of the U.S. Men's National Team.

The LA Galaxy are arguably the most high profile soccer team in America today. A charter member of the MLS, the Galaxy have each won the MLS cup and US Open Cup twice. The current roster includes US star and southern California native Landon Donovan. The team has been home to numerous former members of the U.S. National team, including Alexi Lalas and the Galaxy's all-time leading scorer Cobi Jones.

Recently, an amazing sell-out crowd of 93,174 watched the Galaxy take on FC Barcelona at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

Both the Galaxy and Chivas play in the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA - arguably the premier soccer-specific stadium in the U.S. The stadium complex, which seats 27,000 is designated as an official U.S Olympic Training Site. It is home to soccer fields, tennis courts, running tracks and countless other training facilities for amateur and professional athletes alike.

Completed in 1923, Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is located in the University Park neighborhood of Los Angeles at Exposition Park.

With a seating capacity of 93,607, the Coliseum has played host to the USC Trojans (NCAA) since 1923.

In addition, The Coliseum has the distinction of being the only stadium in the world to host the Olympic Games twice, in 1932 and 1984.

It is also the only Olympic stadium to have also hosted Super Bowls and World Series.

The Coliseum is served by the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transit Authority buses and light rails.

Rose Bowl

Completed in 1922, the Rose Bowl is located in Pasadena, California, ten miles away from Los Angeles.

With a seating capacity of more than 92,000, the stadium has played host to UCLA Bruins (NCAA) since 1982 and the annual Rose Bowl Game (NCAA) since 1923.

In addition, the stadium hosted events during the 1932 and 1984 Olympics, has hosted the Super Bowl five times (1977, 1980, 1983, 1987, 1993) and was the venue for eight matches during the 1994 FIFA World Cup, including the Final, and four matches during the 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup, including the Final.

During the summer of 2009, the Rose Bowl hosted an international friendly between Barcelona and the LA Galaxy that drew 93,137 spectators.

Los Angeles Metro's Gold Line serves Pasadena.

About Los Angeles, CA

The City of Los Angeles holds many distinctions.

LA is the entertainment capital of the world, a cultural Mecca boasting more than 300 museums, and a paradise of good weather.

From tourist attractions like the Walk of Fame's collection of stars (numbering 2,342, and growing by one or two a month) to career opportunities like those presented in the expanding biotech industry, Los Angeles is the place to be.

Southern California's climate has often been described as "perfect" and with good reason. Most days are sunny and warm, with gentle ocean breezes in the summer.

The humidity is low with little rain. In fact, there are no unpleasant seasons in Los Angeles.

The diverse, multi-ethnic population of Los Angeles today distinguishes the city as the cultural hub of the Pacific Rim.

In fact, Los Angeles is one of only two U.S. cities without a majority population. People from 140 countries, speaking approximately 86 different languages, currently call Los Angeles home.
