Soccer in San Diego
In sunny San Diego, locals find it hard to resist spending their days at the beaches. That's why they've combined the best of both worlds - and often play their soccer on the beach.
In fact, beach soccer - originating in Brazil - has become popular enough in California that the state has held its annual beach soccer championships in nearby Oceanside. The 2008 tournament drew a record-breaking 25,000 people to the beach, and had 274 participating teams, including 8 professional squads.
Indoor soccer has also been successful in southern California. The San Diego Sockers have been one of the most successful professional indoor soccer teams in the country. Playing in several different leagues since the mid 70s, the Sockers have won numerous league championships - including an astonishing 8 titles in the Major Indoor Soccer League between 1983 and 1992 - and boast an amazing alumni list including Julie Veee, Kevin Crow, Zoltan Toth and Jean Willrich.
San Diego United is yet another team in the area - playing in the NPSL.
San Diego's native son Steve Cherundolo crafted his touch playing for San Diego's Nomads youth soccer club and has been a longtime defender in European league soccer and made over 50 appearances on the U.S. National Team.
