Looking back to '94
In 1994, despite initial skepticism from some in the soccer world, FIFA had the vision to award the United States the FIFA World Cup™.
This event established an attendance record that still stands today.
It drew a record crowd of 3,587,538 and an average match attendance of 68,991.
The tournament was won by Brazil in a penalty shootout with Italy. The United States National Team advanced to the round of 16, before losing to the eventual champions.
The games invigorated soccer in the United States and the world. Rising out of the success of the tournament, Major League Soccer kicked off two years later and continues to grow each year.
