The Bid
Sixteen years ago, the United States proudly hosted the FIFA World Cup™ despite criticism from many in the soccer world. Now, the '94 FIFA World Cup™ is widely considered the most successful in FIFA's history and is considered responsible for the soccer renaissance that followed in the USA, both on and off the field.
At a professional level, Major League Soccer (MLS) was created in 1996. MLS kicked off its fourteenth season on March 19, 2009 featuring fifteen teams each playing thirty regular season matches. The league will expand to sixteen teams in 2010 and to eighteen teams in 2011. Since 1999, a total of seven soccer specific stadiums have been constructed in our country and by 2010 that number will increase to ten.

The development of the game is tangible nationwide on the men's and women's side from youth teams to the national team level. In 2009, The US Men's National Team qualified for its sixth consecutive FIFA World Cup™, a feat previously achieved by only nine other countries (of the 208 eligible) in the history of the competition.
Off the field, organizations are using the popularity and organization behind soccer as a tool for positive social change in the United States and abroad. The US Soccer Foundation and MLS W.O.R.K.S are two of many associations making an impact on the everyday lives of those in need. Non-profits organized around the game are striving to affect change in education, health, sustainability, and other noble causes worldwide.
